Designer Reinvents Formal Occasion Fashion Staple

Published April 2, 2014 by jurneyjurray

Jewelry designer, Jenée Dionne, handcrafts the corsage into a keepsake of wearable art.

STOCKBRIDGE, GA April 1, 2014— As Jurney Jurray, LLC the boutique of handcrafted jewelry, handbags and women’s apparel continues to look forward to a fabulous year in fashion, designer Jenée Dionne introduces a new wave of customized corsage bracelets to compliment formal occasions. The Ribbon Corsage and Full-Bloom Corsage bracelets are innovative alternatives to floral decor accessories.

Each bracelet is hand-beaded with over 150 beads of pearlized glass, elegantly laced with ribbon fashioned into a floral design. The Full-Bloom Ribbon Corsage has the addition of a centered crystal accent. This elegant one size fits all pearl cuff is available in four standard colors: white, Mother of Pearl, silver and gold. Customization of the ribbons are coordinated with the consumer’s decor.

Unlike the delicacy of a traditional floral corsage, the ribbon corsage bracelets can be worn on a multitude of formal occasions, as the keepsake accessory will not wither away like delicate petals. This beautiful, innovative creation is becoming a popular accessory amongst many formal events to include: bridal accessories, bridal parties/gifts, prom, homecoming and other elegant events.

Collarette Necklace DIY

Published December 15, 2013 by jurneyjurray

Inspired by my latest sewing project, I had the urge to make a new piece of jewelry. In the midst of designing my mixed print peplum jacket using color blocking techniques, I took a pause and began thinking about how to accessorize the peplum jacket and pencil skirt. The fabric colors and prints are crisp, bold yet vibrantly balanced, so I wanted to create a complimentary piece to visually enhance the look.

Using two rows of 16 inch golden cable chain, I began by finding the center point of each set of chain. I then beaded  a golden eye pin with a 6mm pearl, which then entered the center point of the top chain and was again beaded with a 4x6mm rondel crystal then an 8mm pearl and placed through the mid-point link of the bottom chain and finally a 6x8mm crystal was added to the eye pin then closed by a loop (created using needle nose pliers). next I beaded another eye pin with a 10mm pearl, which after creating a loop I connected to the bottom loop of the 6x8mm rondel crystal.

In order to create the rounded effect of the collarette style necklace, before adding the next beaded eye pin I counted five chain links to the right and continued beading into the top chain. After entering the top chain and beading the 4x6mm rondel crystal and 8mm pearl, I counted over six links and placed the eye pin through the bottom chain and finally beaded the 6x8mm rondel crystal and closing with a loop. I work right to left of the center point because it helps me keep count and track of the center, as I intentionally use an odd number of beadwork. For instance, you may want your center point to have a large teardrop crystal for a more romantic effect!

Please feel free to connect with me with any questions!

Fear Not, Mixed Prints

Published December 5, 2013 by jurneyjurray

I love the concept of mixed prints, however I’ve always been petrified of combining prints for fear of a NOT so harmonious outcome. Inspired by many designers who have successfully pulled off this alluring look, I went for it!

I admit, I played it safe attempting to avoid a fashion faux pas. By combining similar animal inspired prints, I then used contrast color blocking techniques for the peplum and bodice to magnify the prints. Now I’m fully aware that animal inspired print is somewhat of an acquired taste, but I wanted to be bold in preparation for an upcoming fashion show. I look forward to showcasing this mixed print peplum dress along with my latest designs on the runway at the Sweet Dreams Couture Fashion Show December 7, 2013 at Colony Square Mall in Midtown Atlanta.

The purpose behind Sweet Dreams Couture is iDream’s goal to make a positive difference not only in the immediate community but also in the international community as well. 100 percent of donations received will go towards providing a breakfast and lunch program to students at Scotts Hall Primary School and St. Alban’s Primary, which are both located in two of the most impoverished communities in Jamaica. As iDream challenges students in Atlanta to become global citizens, they are exposed to the poor conditions that other children around the world face and ways in which  a difference can be made in their lives.

Speech is Silvern, Silence is Golden

Published October 23, 2013 by jurneyjurray

“Speech is silvern, silence is golden,” credited to the poet Thomas Carlyle in his 1836 novel Sartor Resartus, meaning The Tailor Re-Tailored, which sums up my latest project in more ways than one.

During the past few weeks those who know me may have thought I fell off the face of the earth, but truth is I’ve gone back to the drawing board to reinvent my pearl cuff ribbon corsage bracelets. I decided to refocus my energy toward a product with a unique commercial appeal, which was a leap of faith on my behalf especially since I have crafted over 200 pieces from jewelry to handbags. My mission was to not only reinvent my bracelets, I wanted the world to see them and in order for me to do that I had to coordinate a fashion photo shoot. Where there’s fashion there’s clothes, and where there’s clothes there’s a designer…and at the end of all that there’s me who badly wants to make this happen.

After the bracelets passed my stringent checks and balance system, I began designing clothing to compliment them. I am a freestyle artist, so I make what I envision and/or draw without patterns etc., however I found throughout the design and sewing process that sometimes vision and end results don’t always look the same. Like I’ve said many times before, each piece may not have turned out the way I intended it to, but it always turns out exactly the way it was meant to be. Having sewn 2 dresses, 1 bolero, 1 full-length skirt, 1 pencil skirt, 1 cropped blouse, 1 jacket and 1 pair of high waisted shorts within a deadline of 10 days, I amazed myself.

Don’t get me wrong, this was a far cry from a smooth process. I worked many nights until 4a.m. only to wake up by 7a.m. to get my kids off to school, then back to work. Not only were the hours grueling, but I made mistakes, and not the “oh I didn’t know” mistakes…no, I made silly mistakes on seemingly every single piece I had sewn. Arm holes were sewn shut, zippers sewn inside-out, seams sewed on the outside rather than the inside…you name it I did it! But it was all a part of the journey and I learned many important lessons and I am grateful for them all. Once everything was finally complete for the photo shoot, I believe I had 24 hours to spare, I looked over everything and realized something was missing. What was missing was me, my touch. I began in business crafting jewelry and that was the missing piece to this collection of clothing, so I broke out my tools and began beading away until every single piece was infused with jewelry. The full collection will be unveiled on the runway December 7, 2013 at the Sweet Dreams Couture fashion show in Atlanta (click here for more information).

The journey is far from complete, but the tongue I withheld during the designing and sewing process yielded golden nuggets in my book. I can’t wait to share more moments from the shoot.

The Mark of a Makeup Artist

Published October 8, 2013 by jurneyjurray

When it comes to makeup I by far am no artist, but I am fortunate enough to have worked alongside an amazing MUA from Alabama, Dustin S. Lazenby who started his amazing career in 2009. Having gleaned tips and techniques from drag queens at my favorite learning institute “YouTube University,” Dustin continues to take his career to the next level with big plans well within his reach.

Starting out Dustin worked as a representative for Mary Kay, but found that the selling aspect of the business was not his forté, and soon discovered that makeup application was his strongpoint. He recalls watching his mother spread out her makeup on the kitchen table while “beating her mug” as he says, in her tri-fold mirror on her way to work. Dustin understood as a youth that he had a passion for the fashion industry, but just wasn’t sure how to incorporate his skills into the industry having an appreciation for all aspects. After high school, he attended art school learning color theory and art history.

He has studied under the likes of celebrity MUA Mikel Cain. While Dustin doesn’t have a particular style, he is well-rounded and most noted for incorporating appliqué into his artistry. He’s used foil, lace and gemstones as a palette for his canvas, and pulled off some amazing looks. Appliqué work is challenging, but that’s what he loves about it, and no matter the request it is his preference to try something new. “I never tell a client or photographer I can’t do something…I will find a way!” says Dustin with conviction.

Challenges that Dustin faces are the growing pains of business, while funding is at times an issue. “I have big dreams and it takes the all mighty dollar to sometimes make things happen,” he says. “I used to say that my disability (being an amputee with back damage) was an issue, but I don’t feel that way anymore. I am dedicated to my career and will do whatever it takes to succeed.”

Inspiration for Dustin is drawn from a multitude of resources such as magazines, television, music videos and art history. Synergy also moves him to perform at a pinnacle level, while working cohesively from vibes of other industry artists. Thus far, Dustin has done work for Fenuze Magazine, Inspire Magazine, and for numerous websites. He is currently writing for the online LGBT magazine, Four29media.com where he had previously given an interview that has blossomed into a writing opportunity. Dustin’s portfolio can be viewed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/DSLdesign.talentLLC, as well as other social networking sites and applications such as Model Mayhem (#2325496), and Instagram (sunkist2025).

If he had the opportunity, Dustin would have appreciated a chance to work alongside fellow Southern gentlemen, Kevyn Aucoin, an American makeup artist, photographer and author, whose short-lived life left an amazing mark of beauty on the industry. “I only wish he were still with us so I could tell him how much of an inspiration he is to me,” said Dustin. “His coffee table book, Making Faces and Face Forward, are my bibles. This man was responsible for so many amazing images during his career, including Madonna’s look for her Blonde Ambition years. He was a genius and was kind enough to share his techniques in his books. He is sorely missed in the industry and, I’m sure, he would still be on the top of his game today, if he were still with us.”

Dustin’s ultimate goal is to open a full service studio called “The Cosmoterium” in Atlanta. The studio would provide makeup, hair, photography, and wardrobe to pull off any look for models, brides, proms, Halloween, and more in addition to an in-house photography studio. “I want Atlanta to always be my home base, so I have a home to come back to when I get back from my travels,” he says. “I want to work with people in New York, Los Angeles, and London, as well. I’d love to feel the creative juices that flow in those amazing cities. Working with photographers, like Mike Ruiz, would be a dream of mine.”

For Dustin, determination is an understatement as his passion fuels his dreams, “I want to make people feel beautiful, and be a part of important events in their lives, whether it be their wedding or a photo shoot to help them excel in their careers. I want to be known and remembered for my work in this industry. I want to leave my mark.”
